Advertising as Profession

6th March, 2023

What comes to mind when you think about advertising? Well, for me, it’s a medium for telling your customers what your product is all about and deciding whether or not they should buy it. However, the world of advertising has never been the same, as we see in the present. Earlier advertising was more of a traditional nature and were used to be done on banners, billboards, and various traditional media, even though it applies to today’s generation as well, advertising has increasingly become a digital thing.

After 2020, and now you see pop-up ads, display ads, and various Google Ads. Advertising is not just about having an idea in mind and making an ad. It starts right from an idea to formulating policies and making a finished product campaign, which in turn will be shown to the target audience in a manner that complies with all the policies of mass media. However, what most people don’t understand is that advertising can be a great career option, and it’s highly lucrative. In developing countries like India, where people are mostly choosing doctors and as engineers as a profession, they are not aware of this, and there is a very large lack of awareness. Most people focus on developing a great product. However, that product is of no use until you have a proper and robust plan on how to present it to the world and sell it to the target audience.

Because you can make the best product ever made. However, if nobody wants to purchase it, it will never be sold; to bridge this gap, a lot of advertisers are required, which have been scarce in many countries.

Like India, which is about to become a $5 trillion economy this decade. Advertising not only leads to personal development but also international collaboration, so people can learn a lot about other people’s attitudes through psychological development, and understand what is important for them, which help in understanding human nature better. Advertising is not just for a product but also for creating homogeneity among people. Advertising also lays emphasis on various social issues, like gender. Inequality, women’s empowerment, lgbtq rights, etc.

The question here is: why choose advertising?

The number one reason is having a lot of fun; advertising helps you meet a lot of new people. Then comes more important than assisting your client with what their brand stands for is educating consumers about products and services. It can even help you get quick promotions and faster career growth because if a campaign is successful, it can add massive value to your career and personal development. There are a number of roles in advertising; some of them are illustrators, web designers, social media managers, graphic designers, and SEO experts. Specialist, Media Planner, Content Producer, Copywriter, and many other titles are available. It has the potential to change the world, and you can literally get paid to do so. Most of the layman’s jobs of the world are narrow when it comes to scope; advertising, on the other hand, is concerned on a wider picture, that is thinking outside the box. This is the only reason why many students are opting for their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in advertising. Today, we have many great colleges offering specialization in this field, just like the School of Broadcasting and Communication in Mumbai.

Open the door to unlimited possibilities!

Once you have established yourself as a professional advertiser, copywriter, or director in this field, there is no going back. You can follow this cold trend in a traditional manner or in a more modern manner that is through digital marketing. Also, there are endless career opportunities; if you are not satisfied with one. You can always switch to some other profession. This is the only reason why company product is going to lose its charm and will be of no use unless and until advertisers are able to present it in the best possible manner that no one has ever seen. For example, an iPhone is just a phone, but Apple presents it in such a manner that it no longer remains just a phone; it becomes an iPhone. Nike is just a shoe, but Nike presents it in such a manner that it no longer remains a shoe. It became Air Jordan. Tesla is just a car, but it presents itself in such a manner that it becomes a Tesla.

Now the question is: how do I find a job in the advertising job market?

Any person or aspiring candidate can first create their professional LinkedIn profile with a profession.

Profile photo and a well-written bio, it is advisable to get some certifications like copywriting or video production. Editing, social media management, digital marketing, etc. Then they can start browsing jobs, both full and part time and part-time gigs. Most of the jobs are available under the categories of marketing and advertising, digital marketing, etc. However, it is advisable to apply only to reputed job postings and not pay any advance.

Amount to the employer, as it may turn out to be a scam. Some of the most demanding places for these jobs are Mumbai, India; Los Angeles, California; Vancouver, Canada; etc.

For some professions like copywriting, which can even be done from home, there are professional copywriters making $40,000–$50,000 in this field.
